“LINGLING-O”- PENDANTS (either made of bronze or silver)

Lingling-o is an ifugao accessory that is usually worn as a pendant in a necklace that it has been considered a valuable ornament and is often used as wedding gifts. It is made usually from three local materials: those are wood, silver, and copper depicting the status of the accessory user. The shape is designed in a circular form with a range of size from a five cent diameter up to 5 peso coin radius with an obvious difference on its appearance. Each appearance have a different meaning. The upper two forms are intended for men (especially the warriors) having slight variations and the lower two objects are especially made for the ladies that serves as fertility charm. The lingling-o design for women mimics that of the design of the female clitoris or the female hip bone while the men’s accessory copies the muscular curvature at the back of an athletic male body. The common thing that the lingling-o for men and women has is the hole at its center resembling the outline of an embryo with umbilical cord. the details of the design depends entirely on the craftsman’s interpretation of the user and transforming them in the form of art.
According to local beliefs, using the lingling-o provides you supernatural powers for men, improves the owner’s fertility in the case of women, and lastly, it brings luck to the user. The old folks of ifugao believe that anitos and their ancestors reside in them.
